Y5 Mexico Day
Year 5 had a fantastic day celebrating their History and Geography topics of 'The Maya' and 'Mexico'. A company called Mexicolore visited in the morning and showed children displays and artefacts from the Mayan times. Ian also introduced the children to Maya chanting, death whistles, ocarinas, drums, parades and dancing! It was a noisy but thrilling experience and the children loved getting involved in the action.
In the afternoon, they learnt some Spanish phrases and found out all about the famous Mexican festival, 'Dia de los Muertos' (Day of the Dead'. They also made artistic representations of calavera (skulls) , which Mexicans make as an ofrenda (an offer or gift) for a family member who has passed away.
We absolutely loved seeing the children's costumes and we were very impressed with some of the 'Dia de los Muertos' facepaint!
